A collaboration between Printed Matter, Inc. and American Apparel
Printed Matter is the world's foremost nonprofit dedicated to publications made by artists. Since 1976, the organization has maintained a New York City storefront—part reading room, part gallery—which has since become home to more than 15,000 publications by 5,000 artists, as well as host to exhibitions, performances, and special events. As a collaborator, Printed Matter also publishes limited-edition books and editions by notable and emerging artists.
For BOOK BAGS, Printed Matter and American Apparel collaborated with three artists whose work represents the spirit of independent publishing. Each artist created a graphic for these limited-edition, heavy-weight totes, manufactured by American Apparel in downtown Los Angeles. A portion of the proceeds will support Printed Matter's commissioned projects with artists.
Printed Matter offers an extensive catalog of artists' books on their website.
This bag was designed by Edie Fake.
Edie Fake (born 1980, Chicago) is a Chicago-based artist whose practice includes drawing, zine-making, performance, and tattoo art. His deft and decidedly low-grade imagery is both art and activism with a focus on queer and feminist issues. "DONT NOT KNOW" is a take on the gay mantra, "Don't Die Without Knowing."
